Acupuncture
Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture is a therapeutic treatment that uses precise needle placement to balance energy and promote natural healing. During sessions, the acupuncturist inserts fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body to reduce inflammation, stimulate circulation, and improve organ and musculoskeletal system function. Diagnosis is based on TCM principles, which view health as unique to each individual and as a balance of qi, yin, yang, excess, and deficiency. Acupuncture is the most widely recognized therapy within TCM, with historical records dating back over 3,000 years that indicate its effectiveness in treating various pain conditions and boosting overall well-being.
Joseph Shkreli of Nk Body Philosophy is a licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac) with a Master of Science in Acupuncture (MSAc), specializing in orthopedic conditions and sports-related recovery. He provides personalized care, tailoring sessions to each client and addressing the root cause of a disease or injury. Based on a diagnosis, Joseph develops a custom treatment plan that includes selecting acupuncture points to correct imbalances.
Additional integrative techniques may be incorporated into an Acupuncture session to enhance its effectiveness:
-
Tui Na Massage is a therapeutic form of Chinese bodywork that relieves tension and supports the flow of energy through a combination of kneading, pressing, and stretching methods.
-
Cupping Therapy places cups on the skin and uses suction to generate negative pressure that draws the skin upward into the cup. This process increases blood circulation in the targeted areas where the cups are placed, relieving muscle tension and promoting cellular repair to facilitate healing.
-
Moxibustion involves burning dried mugwort (moxa) on or near the body to generate warmth and stimulate
acupuncture points, offering benefits for chronic pain conditions and digestive issues.
-
Electrical Stimulation (E-stim) applies low-frequency electrical currents through acupuncture needles inserted into the body. This technique enhances the effects of acupuncture for targeted pain relief and promotes tissue repair, which is particularly beneficial for nerve pain, muscle weakness, and post-surgical recovery.
-
Infrared/Far Infrared Therapy delivers deep-penetrating heat that helps relax muscles and improve circulation.

What To Expect During Acupuncture Sessions
All Acupuncture sessions take place at Upsoul Wellness Center. Joseph will start with an initial consultation and assessment to understand the client’s health concerns and goals before beginning treatment on the massage table. He will gather pertinent information about the client’s medical history, symptoms, injuries, lifestyle, and emotional state, as well as observe physical signs like tongue appearance and pulse quality to identify imbalances in the body. Based on the diagnosis, Joseph creates a custom treatment plan for each client, including selecting acupuncture points. Needles will remain in the body for 15 to 30 minutes. During needle placement, clients may feel a light pinch, tingling, warmth, or a dullness indicating stimulation of energy (qi) flow, but many individuals find it painless. Additional integrative techniques may be incorporated into a session. The number and frequency of follow-up sessions will depend on the diagnosis. Generally, Joseph recommends weekly sessions for individuals with chronic conditions and biweekly appointments for maintenance, while acute injuries may require fewer visits.
